Romans 11:22

Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off. 

GOD helps those who seek HIM and sternly chatises those who turn theor backs in HIM. It's ofetn difficult to see these two sides of GOD as HIS methods are done with the big picture in mind. Its like looking at a tapestry from the side. We see a flat, pictureless piece of textile but GOD sees it from the front where the full picture is in view. When we actively seek GOD, we may not immediately have good fortune showered on us. Our reward is spiritual peace, which in turn leads to overall contentment. When we limit our wants and learn to be satified with our needs, we gain spiritual contentment.

On the other hand, when GOD chastises those who shun HIM, they may not suddenly hit brick walls. In fact, often the sinful souls seem to be rewarded with wealth and good times but in the long run, they are spiritually deprived and will meet a less than happy ending. Look at the wealth and lifestyles of many Wall Street sinners and then see where they are now.
