GOD makes it abundantly clear that HE is the ONLY god and we are to place HIM first in our lives, above all else. The first commandment is that we shall have no other gods before HIM. HE also states many times that HE is a jealous god. Some may misinterpret this as GOD being rather egotistical and tyrannical but thats not the case. GOD's main desire for us is to have eternal life in fellowship with HIM. HE wants us to live in paradise in a world free of evil and sin. The only way we can achieve such a lofty goal is to live according to HIS will so GOD drives the point home by demanding that we place HIm above all other earthly gains.

Other religions have multiple gods such as Hinduism and its not my place to denounce any other beliefs. I can only speak on what I believe in. I do know, however, that in today's society, most place material gains above spiritual beliefs. I believe that the first commandment is meant to address this as much as the worshiping of pagan images. Few can argue that so many people in the world today worship money over all else. Money can give you material comfort, earthly power and prestige and to be honest, can buy you just about anything or anyone these days. I myself desire more money to better provide for my family but I can honestly say that there are many things I wouldn't do for money and I certainly do not worship or horde it. Being rewarded materially for hard work is not a sin but placing more importance on wealth than in GOD is and that's what GOD means in the first commandment.

Aside from money, there are other things that people worship over GOD these days, such as fan idolization. I am an avid sports fan and can even say I idolize certain athletes. I buy shoes that are endorsed by them and try not to miss a match that they play in but this is merely an interest of mine and not worshiping.

The truth is that of all the things that we hold as precious in the world are fleeting and are only of this world. None of them can do what GOD and Jesus Christ can do. They may provide some pleasure and comfort but in the end, we must leave it all behind. On the other hand, with Jesus, the end is just the beginning.
