So, I've acknowledged Jesus as my savior and truly believe in Him and have accepted Him in my heart. I have chosen to live my life in accordance with my understanding of GOD's will and I am committed to making the character changes necessary to please HIM. Can I now call myself a good Christian?

When Jesus was on earth, he worked tirelessly preaching the Word, healing the sick and performing acts of GOD until he was betrayed and delivered into suffering and death on our behalves. As the Son of GOD, he could very well have sat on a throne and rained lighting down and shook the ground until all believed but what would we have learned from that? Jesus chose to set an example for us by humbly working without rest, traveling from place to place and performing miracles. He chose to personally visit and give hope to the needy, poor and heal the sick and afflicted. I believe His footsteps wore a path that we were meant to follow.

To be a true believer, not only do you have to believe in your heart and alter your character to shun earthly trappings, I believe it is important to also dedicate yourself to performing Christian works. By works I mean dedicating time, resources and effort to help those less fortunate than yourself. The Bible says to visit the homes of the widows and afflicted and comfort them. This goes beyond writing checks to charities, which is not  a bad thing for those with means but to put forth time and effort to personally get involved is important. As the apostle John wrote in 1 John, "Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and truth."

The path to salvation goes beyond what many people have interpreted from the Bible. It is promised by GOD, through the Word manifested in the body of Jesus Christ when he was among us, to all those who believe but to believe is not an idle state, which many think. To truly believe is to be inspired to imitate Christ's path he set before us. For me, true belief has led to a desire to prove my belief through the changing of my former character and through good works.
