1 Peter 5:1-3

(1) To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ's sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed: (2) Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers, not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; (3) not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.

GOD has called certain people to be ministers of the Gospel. We are all sheep with Jesus being the chief shepherd but we also need ministers to guide us spiritually. They are in essence, shepherds under Christ who have received the calling to lead us to salvation. Peter tells us that those who reveive this calling must accept it willingly. Reluctant acceptance will lead to grumbling, which, in a sense is self exaltation. Ministers must shepherd the flock with eagerness to do GOD's will and obviously not for profit. Finally Peter says a good shepherd does not demand and chastise his flock but lives his life as a good example for those who follow him to immitate as we are meant to be trying to immitate Christ's life.

As sheep, we are easy prey for those who usurp the title of minister. They seek profit and power. The good shepherds are out there though and speak and teach the word of GOD and the way of Christ in truth. Blessed be the good shepherd for he has received his appointment from GOD the FATHER through Christ the Savior.
