Luke 7:41-50
(41) "There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. (42) And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?" (43) Simon answered and said, "I suppose the one whom he forgave more." And He said to him, "You have rightly judged." (44) Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. (45) You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. (46) You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. (47) Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little." (48) Then He said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." (49) And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?" (50) Then He said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you. Go in peace."
Everyone owes a debt to GOD that we can never repay on our own. Debt is a metaphor for sin, which is even used in the LORD's Prayer. Some of us have sinned more than others. Many have clothed themselves in morality and humility but the fact remains, no one is debt free in GOD's eyes. All of us, whether our debt is great or small, are unworthy of HIS presence, so in a sense, we are all equally unclean. That's not to say that GOD doesn't notice pr reward those who do their best to live upright lives but we all owe nonetheless.
In the case of the woman, she showed such faith and humility that GOD chose her actions to be recorded in the Bible for all time. HE equally chose to record Simon's lack of hospitality so that we may understand the difference between humble and strong faith versus self important arrogance. Ths Simon invited Jesus to his home but didn't offer Him the usual courtesies of a guest, which tells us that this Simon thought himslef to be equal or above Jesus and probably thought Jesus was just an interesting celebrity that could gain him recognition in society.
The woman on the other hand, showed total humility by not caring what those around her thought and focused all her attention and faith on Jesus. Her sins or debt were great and many but through her faith, she was forgiven. No matter how great our sins are, through faith in Christ we are assured of forgiveness. Our debt to GOD will be wiped clean.
